The professor posted a little write-up on Blackboard which included this gem by which I will remember him forever: “I was particularly shocked that there were people who analyzed ‘He reads it’ in such a way that the noun phrase ‘he’ is combined with the verb ‘reads’ to create a noun phrase, which is then combined with another noun phrase to form a sentence. This demonstrates that the authors have not the least understanding of syntax, and I would urgently advise those people to look in a book…”
